Dear Sun Devil Advocates,
As we launch into the legislative session, it is critical to mobilize Sun Devil Advocates to help advance the University agenda. Over the next several months, we will be communicating on a regular basis about critical items being discussed in the legislature that will impact funding, programs or services provided to both our local and global communities. It is our goal to not only provide information to you that can be used as “talking points” and “points of pride,” but we will be asking for your help in reaching out to elected officials on issues throughout the session. We thank you in advance for your support during this critical time facing our institution.
As the first message to each of you in 2010, the Alumni Association wanted to fill you in on several ASU points of pride from 2009:
- Time Magazine named our president, Michael M. Crow, one of the nation’s top 10 university presidents.
- ASU was one of the top four “Up and Coming Schools” in the country, according to U.S. News and World Report.
- The National Science Foundation ranked ASU among the nation’s top 20 research universities without a medical school.
- ASU students once again won prestigious Fulbright Fellowships at double the national average.
- ASU hired our third Nobel Prize winner, Leland H. Hartwell, who will lead a major new health initiative on campus.
- And, another of our faculty, ASU Research Professor Elinor Ostrom, shared the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences.
Everywhere we look ASU students, faculty, alumni and campus leaders are pushing the envelope, engineering discoveries and driving change. The spirit of entrepreneurship, excitement and optimism of the Sun Devil community, even at a time where the legislature is promoting drastic cuts in funding to the University, is empowering.
With your informed, active engagement and continued grassroots efforts, we will be able to protect our interests and take action for the future of higher education, ASU and the State of Arizona.
Please encourage your friends, colleagues and all community members to join all Sun Devil Advocates in fighting for ASU.
Sincerely,
Jennifer Holsman
