Dear ASU Advocate Friend,
It’s been a while since we last updated you on “advocacy
happenings” at Arizona State University and we have a lot of
positive and exciting news to share with you!
A brand new advocacy unit has been established at the Arizona State
University Alumni Association. President Crow and Diane McCarthy,
the president of the alumni association are making our outreach and
grass-roots programs a priority as we aim to increase our voice in
the world of local, legislative, state and federal policy matters.
Let us tell you a little about your new advocacy
team…
The advocacy team is headed by Jeff Grant. Jeff has
been active in GOP politics since the late 70’s. He also
served as chief of staff at the Arizona House of Representatives
from 1993-1996 and
as deputy director at the Arizona Department of Revenue from 1997-2003.
He is a 1982 graduate of Arizona State University.
Also joining the team is Carlos Pastor who has been active in Democrat
party politics for many years and most recently worked for Tempe
Mayor Neil Giuliano before coming to the Alumni Association. He is
a 1993 graduate of Arizona State University.
The third member
of the team is Nancy Southern. Nancy has been with the Alumni Association
for 14 years and brings a
vast knowledge of
university and alumni relations with her -- she keeps Jeff and
Carlos going in the right direction!
We’re your new “advoteam” at the
Arizona State University Alumni Association.
So let us tell you briefly what we’ve been
up to since we came together as a team in mid-May.
First, our website
is back up and has undergone a “makeover.” Check
it out here at www.sundeviladvocates.org. Be sure to click on the
link “Special
Legislative Session Report” -- this
is a special link that will give you a first hand birds-eye view
from Scott Smith, ASU’s lobbyist at the Capitol on the recently
adjourned legislative session.
We will continue to look at ways to make our website even more helpful
by providing you with additional tools that will make it easier for
you to communicate directly with our elected officials.
We are also forming a new Advocacy Steering Committee
(ASC). This committee will assist us in our efforts to begin developing
a statewide
army of advocates who will help deliver ASU’s message to our
state legislators.
Mark Killian, a former speaker of the Arizona House of Representatives
has agreed to chair the ASC. Mark is a 1981 graduate of ASU and brings
a great deal of public policy, organizational development and strategic
planning techniques to our outreach efforts. We believe his guidance,
combined with participation from others to be named to the ASC in
the weeks to come, will be a tremendous asset to our efforts. We
thank Mark for recognizing the importance of this advocacy effort
and for joining us in this capacity.
Lastly, we want to thank you! The loyal supporters,
volunteers and alumni of Arizona State University! It was largely
because of your
efforts that we were able to be as successful as we were in the past
legislative session. (Don’t forget to click on the “Special
Report” link at the webpage to see how your hard work paid
off at the Capitol.) With your continued support and the support
of many others who share a proud connection with ASU, we can ensure
that our important message is heard by each legislator.
It is our mission to make this network bigger and to operate with
excellence and to give you more tools to make you even more effective.
So once again,
from your new “advoteam” -- we
say thank you and if any of you have any suggestions, comments
or observations
you would like to share with us concerning our advocacy efforts,
just click on this link advoteam@sundeviladvocates.org and let
us know!
Take care,
Jeff Grant
Advoteam Leader
