Dear Sun Devil Advocate,
The legislature
adjourned in June and it has been a relatively quiet summer on
the legislative front. Our last newsletter
to you highlighted the key legislative accomplishments for Arizona
State University.
However, if
you’d like a more in-depth look at this year’s
legislative achievements, we have posted the 2006 Legislative Report
on our Sun Devil Advocate website — it can be accessed by
clicking on the link below:
www.sundeviladvocates.org We hope you’ll
take the opportunity to peruse the legislative report — and
we want to thank you again for all your advocacy work on behalf
of ASU. Thank you to all of you who either emailed
your legislators after we sent out an email action alert or volunteered
at ASU Day at the Capitol or recruited more members to our Sun
Devil Advocate Network.
Do you realize in two years we have gone from 298 advocates to
1,364 today! The bigger our advocacy army the better we will do
at the legislature! So please keep sending your co-workers, friends,
relatives and alums to our website at www.sundeviladvocates.org
and have them register just as you did to become a member of the
Sun Devil Advocate Network!
Well it may
have been quiet down at 1700 W. Washington this summer,
but it hasn’t been at Arizona State University! I
thought you would be interested to see the latest statistics regarding
this year’s enrollment numbers. Check out these numbers!
| • |
Enrollment increased by 4% from last year — to 63,278 from 61,033 |
| • |
Incredibly, ASU's enrollment has grown by nearly 8,000 students in four years! |
| • |
There
are 51,234 students on the Tempe campus |
| • |
6,545
on the Polytechnic campus — up from 4,865 last year |
| • |
ASU West grew by 6% from 7,734 to 8,211 |
| • |
ASU
has the largest freshman class of any public
university
in the nation — exceeding 9,000 students. |
| • |
A record 186 freshmen National Merit Scholars had
registered for classes by mid-August with 64 being from Arizona. |
| • |
Last year, ASU had 155 National Merit Scholars, the
third most of any public university in the nation and 13th
overall. |
| • |
92 National Hispanic Scholars had registered for
classes by mid-August, 20 more than last year. This is a 300%
increase in five years! |
| • |
Almost
a third of Arizona resident freshmen are minority students
and
28% of the freshman class is composed of minority
students. That’s an 11.4% increase from last year and
a whopping 164% increase in 10 years! |
Well, there you have it! These are just some of the numbers that
have been recently released that we wanted to share with you. It
tells me we must be doing something really right as a university
to see the quantity and quality of our student body.
As a proud alumnus,
I love to share these numbers with my friends and neighbors (especially
my U of A friends) and I hope you’ll
do the same!
Once again, I want to thank all of you for your continued advocacy
efforts. You truly do play an important role in our legislative
success!
Go Devils!
